Man-made Versus Natural "Inventions"

It's funny that we think of human inventions as somehow being more "advanced" and "sophisticated" that natural processes, creatures, and systems. I marvel at the beauty and complexity of plants, bugs, bacteria, and ecosystems that exhibit incrediblly elegant design features that put our jumbo jets and skyscrapers to shame. My interest in this area of investigation was spurred on by the discovery of a new movement called "Biomimicry" that direcly applies scientific knowlege about biology to industrial uses. Special chemical and physical characterisics of gecko feet can be used in inspire new adhesives. The structural properties of termite mounds in Africa have been emulated by building architects to increase airflow and decrease room temperatures without using additional electricity for HV systems. For more information, read more on this website: http://www.biomimicry.net/.

One of the most exciting frontiers for both scientists and business leaders is the creative exploration of the rich opportunities where natural science and human invention overlap to create safer, more appropriate technology.
